Added additional details about three coming events in February, the Valentines Ball with the Rolls Royce Club, the kart racing event at F1 Boston, and the long-awaited multimedia show on Bruce Murray's ride in the 2005 Mille Miglia that is a part of JANE's regular February monthly meeting.

Another change is that the event report on the 2006 AGM and Holiday Party has been redone in a new format under consideration for future event reports.  I think the new slideshow format will provide more flexibility in viewing and enjoying the event reports.  Please give it a look and let the webmaster in on your reactions.

Finally, the PayPal-based ad facility for non-members is up and running.  Non-members can register for a three-month Guest Membership and pay their $15 through PayPal for posting their own ad on the website.  The same ads will appear in the Coventry Cat for three months running.

Two major changes on January 12. First, the calendar was updated to 2007 with all known and planned events for the full year.

Second, the interactive online classified ad service was launched for members.  With these new capabilities, members can manage their own classified ads on the JANE site.  JANE members will now find a new button on the menu of their personal home page -- My Classifieds. Clicking on this button will bring up a form showing all active classified ads for the user and hot links to add new ads or modify old ads.  Clicking on the Add button will produce a dialog box where information and a photo about the ad can be entered.  Once the form is filled in and submitted, the ad will immediately appear to all site users, including non-JANE members.  The Modify link works similarly, allowing members to edit any aspect of their ad.  Deleting an ad is done through the Modify link.  Ads for members will run indefinitely.  Please delete ads that are no longer relevant.

This morning we went live with a new interactive JANE website.   JANE members with email addresses on file with JANE should have received an email describing the new features, and in that email your new JANE website user code was included.  If you are a member with an email account, send an email to webmaster@j-a-n-e.org and your user code will be sent by return.  If you do not have an email address you can still arrange to access the site by calling the webmaster at 781-641-3537.

JANE's website now offers new capabilities to JANE members featuring three different levels of access.

Public Access: Pages open to all browsers will be limited to the Home Page, Classifieds, JANE Calendar, and certain other publicly-oriented pages. 

Registered User Access: Much of the content of the old JANE site will now be available only to registered users. Registered users will require a user code and a password to access this content. The restricted content includes Event Reports, Meeting Minutes, and the Coventry Cat.

JANE Member Access: JANE members will have access to all of the old web site content plus new features designed to make the site more interactive and more of a shared community for us Jaguar owners.

All current JANE members have been pre-registered. Your user code and password are shown later in this email. With this user code and password you will be able to get to all of the JANE website features and content.

Interested browsers who are not JANE members are welcome to register for a Temporary Guest Membership that will extend for a limited time period from their registration (now three months).  After a quick and simple registration form, they, too, will get access to the Coventry Cat and Event Reports, although only on a temporary trial basis.  They will not be allowed to view Meeting Minutes or any of the club members' profile information.

Full Member Only: In this third level of access there are a host of new interactive facilities on offer.

First, your profile information, which is currently in the JANE directory, is now online. Through your user code and password you can view, change, or add to your personal profile, including uploading pictures of yourself and your hobby cars (up to five).  It's quick, easy, and the results are accessible for other JANE members to browse or search. This profile information is NOT accessible to casual browsers or registered Guests.

In addition to accessing your own profile information, you can browse and search the information on others.  Ever wonder who in the club has an XK140 DHC?  What other members live in Chelmsford?  What is another member's phone number? -- when your directory isn't handy?  What is another member's email address?  Now you can search for this kind of information online.  Be sure and check out your profile soon and add to it, especially photos of those wonderful cars.

With the new site you can now pay your annual dues online with PayPal.  It's quick, easy, and you don't even need a PayPal account -- just a credit card.

There is also an internal Blog facility.  Want to share your car experiences with other JANE members? Blog it with your own personal JANE Blog.

Finally, there is an internal email system should you choose to communicate with other JANE members through JANE's own internal email system.

In the future we will be adding new features. The first may be an online classified ad system where JANE members can post their own car-related ads.

These ads are open to all browsers, not just members, so you will have a large potential audience. For potential advertisers who are not JANE members, there will be a facility for them to pay for ads through PayPal.

Any new ideas for other features are always welcome!

Also, we urge you to change your password as soon as possible to something that is secure and easy to remember.

Sorry for the hiatus in updating the web, but I have been in the midst of a major restructuring of the site.  You will not see much of a difference, because the effort has been aimed primarily at making it easier to maintain and change.  For those of you  familiar with web technology I'll bore you only briefly.  Everyone else can skip the next paragraph.

The changes involved converting the entire site to FrontPage Dynamic Web Templates and Cascading Style Sheets.  The site had originally been set up when browsers were much less sophisticated and each page had to be manually formatted as an individual page.  Now most formatting things are centralized in a few style sheets so maintenance and adding new pages is much easier.  Also, the pages should load faster than in the past.

As a user, you will also notice a change in most hyperlinks.  In the normal state they are the same as always -- bold, black, italic, and underlined.  The changes are that it should now be even easier to identify links, as when you hover over them they turn blue.  Also, after you visit a link it turns green.

In addition to these technical changes, this update has added the June 2006 Coventry Cat, an event report on the May meeting at Larz Anderson Auto Museum, and a number of smaller changes to get the site up-to-date.
